I Should've Been A Grip...

As I was doing research the other day (read: going to random websites and procrastinating), I stumbled upon this article that talked about the proposed ban of large sodas in NYC. Interestingly enough, it wasn't the absurd subject matter that made me do a double take, but rather the very first line:

"While hit new movies might make millionaires out of actors, directors and key grips, movie theaters often make little to no money on the actual ticket sales of high-profile, first-run movies."

How many of you can spot what's wrong with that sentence?*

* Either that, or I'm in the wrong department...

You know, I had my days to join Local 80 thirty years ago... even took the health "exam" at one of the Motion Picture clinics -- which consisted of the doctor tapping my knee to check reflexes, then asking "Are you a drug addict or alcoholic?"

"Not yet," I replied.

"Then you're good to go," he said.

But I didn't do it. I just wasn't a grip at heart, and didn't want to spend the next five years hanging green beds on the gang before getting a day on a show. Besides, I was already BB'ing low-budget features in electric, so I let that opportunity go.

Little did I know that I'd passed my one and only chance to be a millionaire...

I want to know who did the research on that article. The DP might make millions if they're high end but anyone in the mines, no matter how high they may be, would be luck to break middle middle class with what we earn now a days.

When will they realize that it is the week-in week-out $150K paychecks that will lead to financial wealth and not the one off score. ;-)

I can't find it, but there's an old New Yorker cartoon showing the head of Gargantuan Studios sitting at his football-field sized desk talking on the phone and he's saying something about wishing he'd been as smart as his kid -- the one who'd become a Key Grip.

There actually are a few keys and gaffers who are millionaires. But you have to work at the top for years and own a lot of equipment.
