The above comment is more likely true when you compare: spark; grip; hammer; camera op. or gaffer to a DP. So many DP's can compose a beautiful shot in their head and descibe the "look" in words, but coudn't pull off the technical aspects even if you had a gun to their head.
Anonymous - From my experience, I've seen Gaffers be good technicians, but rarely ever on the same show. I think it's due to the fact that you have to be in a different mindset when you're doing each job, so you're not necessarily focused on being a good tech when you're Gaffing and vise versa.
A.J. - Also true that some Gaffers move up and become great DP's, but often the DP is from the camera department. If they come from a technical discipline at all....

You also now your on the right track when your a more consistent technician than the gaffer on a 3 million dollar feature.
