Very good points, but I wouldn't...Anonymous -

Very good points, but I wouldn't go as far as to say to never work for free. Working for free was a way for me to gain some experience and make some connections when I had none. The important part is to know when to stop working for free.A.J.https://www.blogger.com/profile/06280771470428710391noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2578728360904637566.post-27325572199750724562014-10-29T22:32:56.760-07:002014-10-29T22:32:56.760-07:00A lot of good points.
I actually was very upfron...A lot of good points.

I actually was very upfront on pricing. Hiring, I'm not a huge fan of people gimmicking me on that side.

What worked well for me was to be ultra humble and cheap when I wasn't busy. I focused on filling my schedule. I started around $18/hr.

As my schedule filled, rate went up.

I NEVER complained about the rate I got, now that I do a fair bit of hiring I don't like that, you make a good point there.

I just thought about what's the next best offer I have. I'm not worth x unless someone is actually willing to pay it.

I also focused 100% on work that could fill the schedule (your hours comment). Initially I chased rate, but I learned to chase hours + rate. That made a difference for me.

One thing is I never went for a kill, or even really negotiated hard. I just made sure I had a base of jobs at one rate before asking for a higher rate.

I'm in a slightly different field then yours, but some similarities as well.

The other thing, never work for free. Seriously, those jobs are 10x HARDER and obviously 10x less pay.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
